New technical specifications for the modern care service
The international standard for call systems is being updated — the new VDE 0834 Part 1 replaces previous regulations dating back to 2000 and is now available as a draft. The revised provisions take into account the changes of the past 15 years involving other standards from a technological perspective.
Update of the technical specifications for call systems
A central theme in the new VDE 0834-1 standard is the connection of call systems with medical-technical devices. These distributed alarm systems must meet the requirements of EN 60601-1-8 accordingly. If a nurse call system is integrated into another network, the operator is obliged to raise possible risks and to define rules governing response measures. In addition, the new version of VDE 0834-1 includes updated references to other standards.
The standard applies to anybody who participates in the planning, installation, testing or operation of call systems. Its scope is not limited to hospitals; it applies to all facilities in which faults in call systems constitute a threat to people, such as care homes or even publicly accessible disabled toilets.
The new regulations will come into force in winter 2015/16. Part 2 of the standard, which exclusively applies to manufacturers, remains unchanged at this stage.
