Svensk Däckåtervinning

recycling company

About the project

Sweden is one of the world's recycling pioneers, with almost all household waste being recycled.

The recycling of used tyres is also leading the way. The company Svensk Däckåtervinning was commissioned to set up a nationwide collection and processing system. Facilities have been built throughout Sweden for this purpose – the largest is in the city of Linköping, 200 kilometres south of Stockholm. This flagship plant alone processes almost half of the 90,000 tonnes of used tyres collected each year. Together with Schrack Seconet, an innovative concept for technical fire protection was implemented at this pioneering plant.

About the solution

There is a high risk of overheating with shredded tyre parts, but fires are difficult to detect with conventional solutions. Schrack Seconet suggested thermal video fire detectors for this application. On the one hand, they use infrared light to make heat radiation visible, while on the other, a second sensor generates a visual video image that makes verification much easier. This ensures a very high level of detection reliability.

The new system was used for the first time in Sweden at the Linköping plant. The detectors were aligned so that they monitor the exact area of the storage pits, everything beyond that remains hidden from view. Even the waste heat from the trucks and machines on the premises does not affect the cameras. The algorithm was adapted so that these temperature changes are classified as irrelevant.

In addition to the thermal video fire detectors, other systems are in use in Linköping: A high-end smoke aspiration system, the ASD 535, has been installed for indoor tyre shredding. The office buildings are equipped with MTD 533X multiple sensor detectors and MCP 545X manual call points. The Integral EvoxX premium system is the control centre for the entire fire detection system. In addition, the systems are visualised with the Secolog IP hazard management system, so that the company can respond quickly and efficiently in critical situations.
